Hurd appointed as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs

January 9, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jeff Hurd (CO-03) announced that Chairman Bruce Westerman (AR-4), Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, has selected him to be Chairman of the Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs. “I am honored to serve as Chairman of the Indian and Insular Affairs Subcommittee, and to build upon the great work of past chairwoman Rep Hageman,” said Rep. Hurd. “Having the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Native American tribes in my district will ensure they have a voice for opportunities to thrive in these western lands we call home. The subcommittee oversees residents of the U.S. Territories that face high poverty rates and are underrepresented in essential federal programs. I thank Chairman Westerman for allowing me to serve at a higher level as a new Member of Congress.” “Last year, the Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs played a vital role in passing the most anti-China legislation of the congress and highlighted tribal voices from across the country,” said Rep. Westerman. “With his legal background working with rural communities, I know Rep. Hurd will continue the successful work on this subcommittee and look forward to working with him in the 119th Congress.” The subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs oversees all Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Alaska Natives, and the 574 federally recognized Indian tribes with approximately two million members. In addition, the U.S. Territories include American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. ###
