Figures Calls for Emergency Hearing on President Trump’s Beef Order

August 31, 2026 Press Release WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) sent a letter to House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT" Thompson requesting a hearing to examine President Trump’s recent proclamation authorizing the import of 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef that can be sold below market-rate, a move that provides minimal to no relief to consumers while harming the long-term viability of local cattle farmers. “The Administration has stated that the action is intended to address elevated beef prices and increase the supply of ground beef for American consumers,” Figures wrote. “However, the decision has raised significant concerns among cattle producers, agricultural organizations, and consumers about what, if any, economic relief this policy will provide. Furthermore, industry stakeholders have raised concerns that the potential long-term negative impacts of this policy, including higher beef prices and forcing cattle farmers out of business, outweigh any short-term relief, which would be temporary and minimal at best.” This move by President Trump comes at a time when farmers are already being hammered by the President’s war in Iran and retaliatory tariffs caused by the White House’s reckless trade policies. In meetings with producers throughout the Second Congressional District, Congressman Figures has heard from those who are struggling, and in response, has pushed to help American farmers through legislation like the Tariff Impacted Farmer Support Act of 2026 , which would temporarily authorize up to $15 billion in relief for family farms. Congressman Figures is again standing up for Alabama farmers and demanding answers to the President’s order by calling for this hearing. “The Committee has a responsibility to understand the implications of the President's latest policy for American agriculture,” Figures wrote. “Thus, the hearing should examine the potential consequences of this proclamation for American cattle producers, the domestic cattle herd, and the long-term stability of our nation’s beef supply chain. Additionally, the Committee should examine whether the proclamation is likely to provide any meaningful relief for consumers and whether it could further undermine the long-term viability of the U.S. cattle industry and our domestic beef supply.” To read the full letter, click here .
