Rep. Sykes Demands Answers from HUD on Unsafe Living Conditions at Akron Apartment Complex

June 11, 2026 Rep. Sykes Demands Answers from HUD on Unsafe Living Conditions at Akron Apartment Complex Calls for Immediate Action on Conditions at Spring Hill Apartments WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representatives Emilia Sykes (OH-13) sent a letter to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner, demanding answers regarding unsafe living conditions at Spring Hill Apartments in Akron. In the letter, Rep. Sykes details months of outreach and oversight efforts undertaken by her office following reports of mold, pest infestations, and other hazardous conditions affecting residents at Spring Hill Apartments. Despite inspections and repeated communication with HUD officials, serious concerns remain unresolved. "Everyone deserves to live in clean, safe, and sanitary housing," said Rep. Sykes. "It is unacceptable that Akron families, seniors, and children are living with mold, pest infestations, and other serious health and safety concerns while taxpayer dollars continue to support these properties. HUD must fulfill its responsibility to ensure federally assisted housing meets basic standards and hold property owners accountable. According to information obtained by Rep. Sykes' office, Spring Hill Apartments has received more than $7.2 million in federal low-income housing tax credits since 2014. The City of Akron has issued citations and fines related to conditions at the property, yet residents continue to report ongoing problems. The letter also raises concerns about HUD-assisted properties across Akron, including reports of mold, water damage, pest infestations, broken elevators, and delayed maintenance repairs. Rep. Sykes requested HUD respond by June 26, 2026, addressing the following issues: How HUD plans to hold the owners of Spring Hill Apartments accountable and address the needs of affected residents. When residents and congressional offices can expect additional guidance regarding the complaint process. Whether HUD intends to impose penalties related to the violations identified at the property. Rep. Sykes also urged HUD to reinstate quarterly meetings among federal, local, and community stakeholders to address ongoing housing concerns throughout Akron.
