Moore Secures Future Interstate Designation for U.S. 74 in Landmark Infrastructure Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Tim Moore’s (NC-14) legislation to designate U.S. Highway 74 from I-26 in Columbus to I-85 in Kings Mountain as a future interstate has been included in the bipartisan BUILD America 250 Act, a five-year surface transportation reauthorization package released this week by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Congressman Moore originally introduced the legislation earlier this Congress as H.R. 1333, continuing an effort first advanced in the previous Congress.
“I’m extremely proud to secure this future interstate designation for U.S. 74 in the BUILD America 250 Act,” said Congressman Moore. “This corridor is one of the most important economic routes in Western North Carolina, and upgrading it will help bring new business investment and long-term economic growth to our region. Including this designation in a major transportation reauthorization package gives this effort real momentum and a clear path to becoming law so these communities can finally get the infrastructure investment they deserve.”
“I believe the BUILD America 250 Act is the most important surface transportation bill since President Eisenhower built the Interstate Highway System. Like the America 250 celebration this year, this bill is not simply about honoring our past – it’s about moving forward and building upon the legacy of our nation’s infrastructure,” said Chairman Graves. “I’m extremely proud of the historic level of investment in America’s bridges – at more than $50 billion, it’s the largest such investment in our history. And the BUILD America 250 Act ensures that electric vehicle owners begin paying their fair share for the use of our roads. The bill also makes smart and targeted reforms to our surface transportation programs, focuses on strengthening our core infrastructure system, drives innovation, bolsters safety, ensures states have the flexibility they need, and cuts red tape to get projects built faster. I want to thank Ranking Member Larsen and our subcommittee leaders for their strong partnership in developing this important legislation.”
The future interstate designation will allow the North Carolina Department of Transportation to place corresponding signage along the corridor running through Polk, Rutherford, Cleveland, and Gaston counties while ensuring the roadway is upgraded to interstate standards. Rutherford County currently has no interstate within its county lines, making the project especially significant for economic development and regional access.
The BUILD America 250 Act is a bipartisan, five-year transportation reauthorization package led by Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Sam Graves and Ranking Member Rick Larsen. The legislation includes historic investments in roads, bridges, rail, transit, and highway safety infrastructure nationwide while streamlining project delivery and strengthening long-term transportation funding.
