Reed Statement on Trump’s Childish Order to Rename Lake Ontario
PROVIDENCE, RI – Today, after President Donald Trump exacerbated his trade war with Canada, called Canadian officials “nasty people,” and signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of Interior to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ in U.S. information systems, U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement: “President Trump isn’t solving problems, he’s creating them. “Canada is a strong ally, a good neighbor, and a key trading partner. This kind of juvenile, erratic, mean-spirited behavior by President Trump is unproductive. “This isn’t going to lower costs, it is going to waste tax dollars. President Trump’s tariff tax regime is doing real economic damage to American families and businesses and forcing them to pay higher prices. “Instead of renaming bodies of water, President Trump needs to start focusing on lowering costs, strengthening the economy, expanding opportunity, and ending his war of choice with Iran. “President Trump is alienating key allies and stoking animosity. He is needlessly raising prices and imposing avoidable economic hardship on Americans because he can’t focus on anything other than himself.”
