Rep. McIver Gives Birth To Her Second Child, A Symbol Of Hope For Her Family NEWARK, NJ – Today, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) announced the birth of her second child, a healthy baby girl. She released the following statement: “Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply grateful to welcome this beautiful, healthy baby into the world,” said McIver. “There really aren’t words to describe how blessed my family feels to welcome a new life into the world. Getting the chance to raise a family is a priority and a delight for me, something I hope everyone who wants to, gets the chance to do. Bringing a child into the world is a reminder not only of why we fight for maternal healthcare and reproductive rights, but of why we fight for the rights and freedoms of our most vulnerable– they are someone’s babies too.” McIver is only the fifteenth-ever member of Congress to give birth while serving. She also has a ten-year-old daughter and is one of only a small group of women serving in Congress with school-aged children. She has shared her tumultuous reproductive health journey , including her battle with uterine fibroids, which required multiple surgeries. One such surgery had her in New Jersey in the morning and rushing to Washington, D.C., that same night to make it in time to vote on the House floor. These experiences have bolstered her deep commitment to advocating for women’s reproductive rights, and strong reproductive and maternal healthcare for all. McIver is also in the middle of a legal battle, facing 17 years in federal prison from charges brought by the Trump Department of Justice (DOJ). The charges stem from a lawfully authorized oversight visit McIver conducted at Delaney Hall, the controversial immigration detention center in her district. The case is ongoing. McIver is a strong supporter of the recent push for proxy voting for new parents, as she will not be granted any paid maternity leave from Congress. She will take the month of October to heal, be with her family, and bond with her new child. She plans to return to voting in November. ### Print Email Share Previous Article About Contact Media Events Issues Services
