“Politics over Principles”: Property Ownership Fairness Act Killed by Democrats

DENVER– On Tuesday afternoon, Democrats in the State, Veterans, & Military Affairs Committee killed the
Property Ownership Fairness Act (SB22-063
), sponsored by
Senator Larry Liston
(R-Colorado Springs). The bill would have enabled property owners to seek “just compensation” if the value of their property had been reduced as a result of a land use law.
“It's very disappointing that the Property Ownership Fairness Act was killed,” Senator Liston said after the committee hearing. “This was a realistic and logical solution to address the housing shortage crisis. I understand that many of my Democrat colleagues on the Senate State Affairs Committee represent staunchly anti-homebuilding constituencies, but it is unfortunate that they had to put politics over principles. We had the opportunity to really do something great for the people of Colorado.”
The bill died on a party-line vote, 3 to 2.
“We will bring this bill back in the future,” Senator Liston promised. “The Republican commitment to make Colorado more affordable for all Coloradoans still stands.”
Senate Bill 22-063 was part of the Republican’s “
Commitment to Colorado
” legislative package.
