Cortez Masto Statement on Ninth Anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival Massacre

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto released the following statement on the ninth anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival Massacre, the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history: “On October 1, 2017, the city of Las Vegas, the state of Nevada, and the entire United States were shaken to their cores when 58 people were killed and nearly 500 were injured at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. Two more people died later from their injuries. It’s been nine years since that harrowing day and the weeks that followed, but I still remember it so clearly. “Those were some of our darkest days as a city, and I know it was felt throughout the country. It would have been so easy for Las Vegans to give in to the fear and despair. But instead of letting the shock of this tragedy take over, Nevadans from across our state brought the light back to Las Vegas. Nine years later, we are still Vegas Strong. “We remain grateful for the first responders, the members of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, the health care workers, and the everyday Nevadans who dropped everything to help save lives in the aftermath. And we will never forget the victims of the Route 91 Harvest Festival massacre and their families. Today and every day, we carry them in our hearts.” ###
