Congressman Al Green Hosts Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Slavery Remembrance Legislative Update and Assembly in the Capitol Visitor’s Center Auditorium

August 12, 2026 Press Release (Washington, D.C.) — On Saturday, August 15, 2026, Congressman Al Green will host Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for a historic Slavery Remembrance Legislative Update and Assembly to implement a National Day of Slavery Remembrance on August 20th annually. The annual event will help ensure the evils of slavery are never forgotten and thus never repeated. The assembly will be held in the Capitol Visitor’s Center Auditorium located at 2 U.S. Senate Drive, Washington, D.C., 20510, at 11:00 a.m. ET. The theme of this year’s Slavery Remembrance Day is “ Harder Yet May Be the Fight .” The event will spotlight key legislative initiatives, including the legislation establishing Slavery Remembrance Day. Congressman Green will highlight efforts to secure Congressional Gold Medals for the enslaved, recognizing their immense contributions as the foundational mothers and fathers of America’s economic greatness. This effort also seeks to address a historical disparity in congressional recognition, as Congress authorized medals honoring Confederate veterans in 1956 while no comparable honor has been bestowed upon the enslaved persons whose uncompensated labor helped build the nation. “Today, there is a national effort to erase or negate the sacrifices, struggles, and contributions of African Americans,” said Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
