Larson and Democratic Colleagues Move to Force House Vote to Protect Medicaid and SNAP

Image May 7, 2025 Press Release Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) signed a discharge petition to force a vote in the House to protect Medicaid and nutrition assistance programs like SNAP from proposed budget cuts. “Republicans in Congress and President Trump are trying to pass legislation that puts Medicaid and nutrition assistance on the chopping block – all to pay for a tax break for the ultra-wealthy,” said Larson . “Today, I joined my Democratic colleagues to move to force a House vote on legislation that would take these devastating cuts off the table. My Republican colleagues keep saying they do not want to cut Medicaid and SNAP, yet their budget calls for the largest cuts to these programs in our nation’s history. Join our effort to protect Medicaid and SNAP from cuts. We only need a handful of Republicans. Now is their chance to stand up for their constituents.” The Trump-Republican budget would: Deliver a $4.5 trillion tax cut for the wealthy , an average annual tax cut of $314,266 for the richest 0.1% of Americans Threaten Husky Medicaid coverage for 135,355 CT-01 residents , including 48,894 children and 15,861 seniors Reduce or eliminate SNAP nutrition benefits for 40,993 CT-01 residents House Democrats’ Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act would prohibit Congress from considering budget reconciliation legislation that cuts Medicaid or SNAP nutrition benefits. If their discharge petition receives 218 signatures, it will come before the House for a vote. Issues : Health Care Standing Up to Trump and ‘DOGE’
