🪖 New Protections for Veterans
Veterans reported losing more than $400 million to scams in 2024 alone — and that number keeps rising. The problem : The VA benefits system is so fragmented and confusing that it’s become a prime target for scammers who prey on those who served our country. Common scams include: 🔸 Benefit buyouts – Offering fast cash in exchange for a veteran’s future benefits 🔸 Fake records fees – Charging for military documents that the VA provides for free 🔸 Bogus charities – Posing as veterans’ nonprofits to solicit fake donations The solution : The House just passed the Veterans Claims Education Act , a bipartisan bill I was proud to cosponsor that delivers clarity and protections for veterans by: ✅ Ensuring veterans are told about free, VA-accredited resources before filing for benefits ✅ Creating a searchable tool to find trusted agents and Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) ✅ Establishing a reporting process for fraud and unaccredited actors Bottom Line: We owe our heroes a system that protects what they’ve earned — and this bill is a big step toward delivering on that promise.
