Booker Introduces Resolution Designating October 2026 as Lewy Body Dementia Awareness Month

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced a Senate resolution expressing support for the designation of October 2026 as “Lewy Body Dementia Awareness Month.” The resolution aims to increase public understanding of the disease and to support the patients, families, and caregivers affected by it. “Too many families affected by Lewy body dementia spend years searching for answers while their loved ones suffer. Every family deserves an accurate and timely diagnosis, and every caregiver deserves our support,” said Senator Booker. “This resolution shines a light on a disease that is too often overlooked, and I am proud to help raise awareness in October” Lewy Body Dementia affects an estimated 1.4 million people in the United States. It is the second most common degenerative dementia and the most expensive form of dementia. The condition includes dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia, and its symptoms can include cognitive decline, movement difficulties, visual hallucinations, fluctuations in alertness, REM-sleep behavior disorder, and autonomic dysfunction. Many people living with Lewy body dementia wait years for a correct diagnosis, which can lead to serious patient harm and avoidable health care spending. Millions of family members, caregivers, and friends also provide around-the-clock care and are deeply affected by the disease. The resolution also underscores the need for more research, education, and support services, including training healthcare providers and emergency personnel to recognize the disease and support early, accurate diagnosis.
