March 20, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congressman George Latimer (NY-16) released the following statement after President Donald Trump signed an executive order eliminating the U.S. Department of Education: “I adamantly oppose this negligent action. Abolishing a federal agency requires an Act of Congress. President Trump’s executive order to dismantle the Department of Education is unconstitutional and will be challenged in the courts. The Department of Education provides critical funding for low-income schools and resources for students with disabilities. Closing the Department of Education does nothing to bring down costs or make life easier for families but will create chaos and cause irreparable harm for students. It will exacerbate existing disparities, reduce accountability, and take away urgently important resources for low-income students and students with disabilities. President Trump is abandoning the futures of public school students throughout the country.” Issues : Education
