Banks Leads Resolution Designating September as Dystonia Awareness MonthThursday, September 17, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senators Jim Banks (R-Ind.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) introduced a bipartisan resolution designating September as Dystonia Awareness Month to raise public awareness and understanding of the neurological movement disorder that affects an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 Americans. Dystonia causes involuntary muscle contractions, and while research is ongoing, there is no cure. Sen. Jim Banks (R-Ind.): “Hundreds of thousands of Americans, including service members and veterans, live with dystonia, but too many cases still go misdiagnosed and undiagnosed. Raising awareness will help more Americans recognize the symptoms, support those living with the disorder, and inspire further researchto find a cure.” The Resolution: Expresses support for designating September as Dystonia Awareness Month. Recognizes the need for further research into new treatments and a cure. Commends medical professionals and researchers working to improve the lives of people with dystonia. Encourages programs and activities that raise public awareness and understanding of dystonia. Background: Dystonia causes excessive, involuntary muscle contractions that can result in abnormal movements or postures and affect a person’s ability to walk, speak, see, or perform tasks. There is currently no cure, but several treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Further research is underway to develop new treatments and ultimately find a cure. Service members and veterans may experience dystonia due to traumatic brain injuries, exposure to certain medications, or other service-related conditions.
