DETROIT NEWS: Michigan Dems raise alarm over Musk team’s access to personal data of millions
“American citizens don’t want unelected billionaires with their private data, all their tax information, their Medicare healthcare records. … What do they want it for? The goals of a billionaire are not the same as the goals of the average American citizen. He has other conflicting interests,” Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly, said Thursday on the Senate floor.
Slotkin argued that Musk, whose companies hold billions worth of government contracts and who has business interests in China, should have to follow the law and file a publicly available financial disclosure after
CBS News
reported Friday that Musk won’t have to.
“This is how we ensure no conflict of interest ― as in making decisions that help your own interests instead of those of your adopted country,” Slotkin posted on X. “The China interests alone raise real questions.”
She predicted the whole issue of DOGE and its access to sensitive data would ultimately be sorted out by the courts through litigation. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said Thursday that what’s happening is “unlawful” and “cannot stand” and that she would “be taking action shortly.”
“What’s the point of confirming a cabinet secretary at the Treasury if a billionaire can just parachute in with a bunch of 25-year-olds to tell him what to do. I mean, that’s humiliating for the cabinet level official, not to mention what that does to the President of the United States,” Slotkin said Thursday.
“I think the bigger question is, what does it mean to have a president that’s beholden to a bunch of billionaires? What is that change about their calculus when they’re sitting in the privacy of the Oval Office making critical decisions?”
