Dexter: Trump “is choosing authoritarianism over governance”

October 1, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, Congresswoman Maxine Dexter, M.D. (OR-03) released the following statement on the first government shutdown in seven years, caused by Trump and congressional Republicans’ inability to govern. “Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House. They could be using that power to make life better for Oregonians and people across the country. Instead, they have spent the last nine months bailing out billionaires and taking a sledgehammer to the services Oregonians depend on. “At the very moment Trump should be working with Congress to open the government, he is sending troops into Portland to incite fear and violence. Once again, he is choosing authoritarianism over governance. “Authoritarianism begins when Congress becomes a rubber stamp. I will not be part of that. I’m fighting for a government funding bill that protects healthcare, lowers costs, and includes ironclad protections to rein in Trump’s power.
