U.S. Forest Service Announces Retroactive Funding for Secure Rural Schools Program

Today, the U.S. Forest Service announced $182 million in retroactive Secure Rural Schools (SRS) payments for 2024. This decision follows the December 18, 2025, three-year reauthorization of the program, which was supported by Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) . Congress first enacted the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act over twenty years ago, which guaranteed funding for rural schools, infrastructure projects, wildfire mitigation, and other essential services.
