U.S. Forest Service Announces Retroactive Funding for Secure Rural Schools Program

Today, the U.S. Forest Service announced $182 million in retroactive Secure Rural Schools (SRS) payments for 2024. This decision follows the December 18, 2025, three-year reauthorization of the program, which was supported by Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) . Congress first enacted the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act over twenty years ago, which guaranteed funding for rural schools, infrastructure projects, wildfire mitigation, and other essential services. In Washington, Rep. Crane worked to build momentum toward reauthorization, and Congress ultimately approved a three-year extension, securing funding for rural communities’ schools and other critical services. Additionally, the timely action by the Trump administration to provide retroactive payments underscores the President’s commitment to rural America,” said Rep. Crane . “I’m proud to have been part of the bipartisan, bicameral coalition working to restore this vital program that delivers for rural Arizona.”
