As Trump Dismisses Need for AI Guardrails, Reed Calls Them Essential for Safety, Economy & Humanity

WASHINGTON, DC -- After President Donald Trump rejected the idea of guardrails on artificial intelligence (AI), stating in a Truth Social post Monday that he alone is a sufficient guardrail against rogue artificial intelligence and claiming that any efforts to responsibly regulate the technology were part of a “SICK conspiracy,” U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, pushed back and says strong, comprehensive guardrails are essential and it would be an abdication of government if Congress fails to provide rules and incentives for AI safety, security, and external oversight. Senator Reed stated: “President Trump is dead wrong. His shortsighted view increases the likelihood that AI will be misused by bad actors or unsafely sped up by corporate interests at the expense of the public. “Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that offers opportunities and risks. As with any new technology, especially something as cutting-edge and revolutionary as AI, laws and regulations must keep pace with the tech’s capabilities. Congress must do its job and provide balanced oversight, standards, and rules of the road. “The AI industry itself is warning that the technology may be evolving at an unsafe pace. Elected officials should heed that warning and responsibly develop solutions to ensure the interests of the American people are protected. “Adding some brakes and speed limits to AI development does not have to mean losing pace with the Chinese. That excuse is both a failure of imagination and a failure of leadership and misunderstands the nature of the AI race itself. “We have a responsibility to ensure AI is used for the public good. That means smart, balanced guardrails and laws that are essential to protecting people, our economy, and humanity itself.
