🏛️ Capital Defense

Across the country, anti-police policies are making it harder for law enforcement to protect our communities. These so-called “justice reforms” don’t improve safety, they tie the hands of officers and put politics ahead of people. That’s exactly what’s happened in Washington, D.C, where violent crime surged 40% while city leaders stripped away police bargaining rights and opened the door to indefinite investigations and public smearing. Why it matters : Thousands of Iowans—especially students and school groups—travel to D.C. every year. Whether you’re visiting on a family trip, touring the Capitol, or meeting with my office, you deserve to feel safe in our nation’s capital. That’s why I voted to pass the Protecting Our Nation’s Capital Emergency Act —a commonsense bill that restores fairness for D.C. police officers. Iowa continues to lead by example—standing strong with the men and women in uniform who protect our families. This bill brings those same values to Washington by: ✅ Giving D.C. police a voice in disciplinary decisions ✅ Reinstating a clear statute of limitations on officer complaints ✅ Protecting officers’ privacy during internal investigations Bottom Line: If we want safe communities, we must stand firm with the men and women who patrol them. This bill helps make D.C. a little more like Iowa—where our neighborhoods are safe because law enforcement is respected.
