Hoyer Statement on Musk and Trump-led Chaos at USAID

February 3, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after Elon Musk and President Donald Trump set off chaos at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID): "Elon Musk and Donald Trump's effort to shutter USAID is part of their mission to overwhelm the public's attention with chaos, crisis, and absurdity. We must not let them. The Constitution and federal law put clear limits on presidential power. Trump and his administration cannot unilaterally dismantle a federal agency established under laws that our Congress passed. "USAID and its hardworking federal employees faithfully serve under both Republican and Democratic administrations to advance America's credibility and interests abroad by helping those suffering from disease and hunger. I will continue working with Democrats to hold the Administration accountable for trying to undermine our federal workers, our Constitution, and our nation's standing in the world."
