WATCH: Senator Kim Joins Rescue Mission of Trenton to Combat Homelessness
TRENTON, NJ – Recently, Senator Kim spent time on the ground with the Rescue Mission of Trenton, an organization whose mission is to help feed those who are hungry, house those who are homeless, counsel those seeking recovery, and provide life-changing opportunities while working every day to combat the homelessness crisis New Jersey is currently experiencing. Senator Kim heard from volunteers and workers about the daily struggles facing those who utilize the shelter, how elected officials can support organizations like theirs that offer direct assistance to those in need, and discussed ways to make real progress in providing safe and secure housing for all New Jerseyans. They also discussed the disastrous outcomes that would result if the Trump Administration succeeds on their threat to cut HUD’s Continuum of Care (CoC) program — currently, the largest federal homelessness assistance funding stream — which would eliminate crucial funding that programs like the Rescue Mission of Trenton and others use to help communities across the state. “I struggled here; suffered addiction…trauma. It wasn’t until I started my recovery journey that I came here and shared my story – it’s not a theory, it’s transformation [at the rescue mission]…Because I do a lot of work within the community as well, I know what is at stake: when funding stops, then the entire pipeline breaks. Individuals don’t just struggle – they go back to the streets; they relapse; [deal with] incarceration and/or death. What we do here at the Rescue Mission works, but it only works if it’s sustained,” said Miquia Delvalle, Staff Member, Rescue Mission of Trenton.
