ICYMI: Bennet Hears Directly from Coloradans about the Risks of Republican Cuts to Essential Government Programs

Washington, D.C.— Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet convened numerous events last week to hear directly from Coloradans who are facing the loss of Medicaid coverage, and higher utility bills because of Republican’s “big beautiful bill.” In addition to hosting three town halls, Bennet held three roundtables with Colorado Veterans who are facing devastating cuts at the VA, Medicaid patients and health care providers at Denver Health, and a third with energy companies who are helping fuel Colorado’s economy with their investments thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act clean energy tax credits that Republicans are threatening to take away.

With Memorial Day around the corner, U.S. SenatorMichael Bennetmet with veterans for a roundtable discussion in Fountain on Saturday, May 24. The discussion focused on the VA and the benefits and treatments veterans are currently receiving. Most expressed their own issues they experienced.

After the discussion,Bennettold The Gazette that the problems with the VA aren’t getting better. “Our veterans deserve to have somebody who will check on them on a regular basis,” he said. “It’s unacceptable that people in that room said it took nine months to see a heart doctor.”Bennetsaid the only way to change that is by monitoring the VA by passing legislation that would create oversight from Congress or other parts of the government.

“I think we have to fight it and I think we’ve got to do everything we can to try to stop it. I don’t want to create a set of false expectations,” saidSenator Michael Bennet. “I think the American people are on our side. The American people think that it makes no sense to cut Medicaid in a way that they’re proposing to do it. And that doesn’t mean they won’t do it, but I think we’ve got to fight as hard as we can to try to stop it.”

The Denver Post:Republican budget bill would strike blow to clean energy efforts in Colorado
U.S. Sen.Michael Bennet, D-Colorado, warned that “the stakes are really, really high for Colorado.”Bennetmet last week with executives from 10 Colorado energy companies to discuss the budget cuts. The tax credits were “doing the job that they were supposed to do and doing that, very, very well in Colorado. Now we’re at risk of them being basically completely ripped away and dismantled.”

Companies like power utility Xcel Energy, wind turbine manufacturer Vestas-American Wind Technology, multiple cooperative power utilities and furnace electrification companies said in a roundtable meeting hosted by Sen.Michael Bennetthat losing the tax credits would mean higher costs to consumers and layoffs at many of their businesses.
