Gillen Helps Preserve Buoys Essential to Long Island’s Maritime Safety

October 22, 2025 Press Release ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — Today, Representative Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement applauding the U.S. Coast Guard’s announcement to suspend its plan to remove critical navigational buoys in the Northeast, including those at East Rockaway Inlet and Jones Inlet on the South Shore of Long Island: “Boaters and fishermen across Long Island rely on navigational buoys to safely travel our waterways. I am glad that following my urging, the Coast Guard has reversed course and backed off their push to eliminate these critical safety markers. I’ll continue to use my seat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to push for bipartisan solutions that make our roads, waters and skies safer for Long Islanders.” In May, Rep. Gillen led a bipartisan push calling on the Coast Guard to preserve current navigational buoys along the Northeast. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Gillen also urged Admiral Lunday to protect the aids to navigation in NY-04 and secured USCG’s commitment to review the proposal. In Congress, Gillen has been a strong supporter of the Coast Guard and Station Jones Beach in NY-04, helping pass legislation to enhance maritime drug enforcement, and advance a bipartisan Coast Guard Authorization Act containing key wins for Long Island.
