Image October 15, 2026 Press Release Dietz receives Congress' highest honor for young civilians in recognition of her commitment to community service, personal growth, and achievement (Rochester, N.Y.)—Today, Congressman Joe Morelle recognized Rochester student Azalea Dietz with the Congressional Award Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the United States Congress upon young civilians. The prestigious award recognizes Dietz's exceptional dedication to community service, personal development, physical fitness, and exploration. “Azalea represents the very best of the next generation of leaders in our community,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “I am proud to recognize her achievements with this prestigious honor, and I hope her example inspires other young people across our community to get involved, pursue their passions, and discover the difference they can make.” A student at Rochester's School of the Arts, Dietz has demonstrated a wide-ranging commitment to service and personal achievement. She volunteered at a local music and arts center, where she worked with children, assisted with summer camp activities, and supported the center's operations and photography needs. Her service also extended internationally to Portugal, where she volunteered at an animal rescue center caring for puppies and at a food bank packaging essential supplies for families in need. As part of her Congressional Award journey, Dietz planned and completed a five-day hiking expedition through the Adirondack Mountains alongside her mother and brother, tackling trails on Whiteface Mountain, Mount Jo, and Ampersand Mountain. Established by Congress in 1979, the Congressional Award is a nonpartisan, voluntary, and noncompetitive program designed to encourage young Americans to set goals, challenge themselves, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. The program recognizes achievement in four areas: Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. Young people interested in participating in the Congressional Award program are encouraged to contact Congressman Morelle's office to learn more about the program, eligibility requirements, and how to get started. ###
