South Carolina Hero Major James Capers Jr. Awarded Medal of Honor

WASHINGTON — Yesterday, President Donald J. Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to retired U.S. Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr., recognizing his extraordinary heroism and leadership during the Vietnam War. Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05), who first introduced legislation to award Major Capers the Medal of Honor and has advocated for his recognition for years, released the following statement: "Yesterday was a historic day for our nation and a long-overdue moment of recognition for an American hero. "When I first learned Major Capers' story, I was struck by the magnitude of his sacrifice and the extraordinary valor he displayed in service to our country. It became clear to me that his actions deserved the highest recognition our nation can bestow. For years, I have worked alongside many others to help ensure his heroism received the consideration it earned. "Yesterday, America honored a warrior whose actions embody the very best of our military and our country. Major Capers' courage, devotion to his fellow Marines, and unwavering commitment to duty serve as an enduring example for future generations. "Few are deserving of this recognition. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Major Capers, his family, his fellow Marines, and all those who worked tirelessly to see this day become a reality." Major Capers, a native South Carolinian and retired Marine officer, led a reconnaissance team during a mission near Phú Lộc, Vietnam, in 1967. During the engagement, Capers sustained multiple wounds while directing his men and coordinating their evacuation under intense enemy fire. His actions were instrumental in saving the lives of every member of his team. The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States for valor in combat.
