Hoeven Working to Advance Redevelopment of Mid-America Steel Site In Fargo

WASHINGTON – At a hearing of the Senate Interior and Environment Appropriations Committee this week, Senator John Hoeven made the case to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin for advancing the redevelopment of Mid-America Steel’s previous location in Fargo. Mid-America Steel was relocated to make way for the region’s nearly complete flood protection project. The former site is centrally located and highly visible, making it a prime candidate for redevelopment. However, as a former industrial site, the city must first address environmental conditions before moving forward. Hoeven is advancing the EPA’s Brownfields Program as an opportunity to assist with the project. Hoeven outlined how he successfully worked with the city and the EPA to use the program in support of remediating the Lashkowitz Tower , which is adjacent to the Mid-America Steel site, prior to its demolition and redevelopment. “The Mid-America Steel site is in the heart of Fargo, but there are some environmental concerns that need to be addressed before this property can be put to good use,” said Hoeven. “Just like we did with the Lashkowitz Tower, the EPA can be a partner in this effort through the Brownfields Program. I welcome Administrator Zeldin’s support and look forward to working more with him and the city to secure this funding opportunity.” -###-
