Senator Markey Slams Republicans for Voting Down Amendment Condemning Trump Threats of Genocide against Iran
Washington (April 14, 2026) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, today slammed Republicans on the Committee for voting against his amendment that condemned President Donald Trump's genocidal threats against Iran and its 90 million people. Last week, President Trump threatened “a whole civilization will die” if Iran and the United States did not reach a deal to end the war that Trump started. Senator Markey’s amendment condemned that statement as “morally repugnant, contrary to the values of the United States, and unbecoming of the office of the President.” Every Republican voted against his amendment.
At the Committee markup, Senator Markey said: “This rhetoric is not strength or leadership. It is an un-American statement that betrays our values and undermines the moral standing of the United States. Every member of Congress, including every member of this Committee, has a moral obligation to reject this unconscionable rhetoric.
“When the President makes appalling threats against 90 million people, this Committee cannot act as if it's business as usual.”
