Nunn . “No matter the situation, they answer the call, and they deserve both recognition and support from Congress.” Law enforcement officers face some of the most dangerous working conditions in the country. According to the FBI, more than 85,000 law enforcement officers were assaulted in the line of duty in 2024, the highest rate in a decade. Departments are also stretched thin by a deepening recruitment and retention crisis. In a 2024 International Association of Chiefs of Police survey of more than 1,150 agencies, 65% reported being forced to cut services or eliminate specialized units because of staffing shortages, up from just 25% in 2019. Across Iowa and the country, that means fewer officers on patrol and slower response times for the families who depend on them. “As proud as I am of the bipartisan solutions we’ve led to increase funding for local departments in Iowa, I’m equally concerned by the rhetoric and actions of some on the far-left who make law enforcement’s job harder,” continued Rep. Nunn . “From calls to defund the police to sanctuary policies that block local officers from cooperating with federal authorities, these decisions put the lives of officers and local communities in harm’s way. This Police Week, the House has a chance to make clear that we stand with the men and women in uniform, and against the rhetoric and policies that put them at risk.” The resolution expresses Congress’s appreciation for the men and women of law enforcement and recognizes the sacrifices they make to protect and serve. It also brings attention to the daily acts of service that go beyond an officer’s typical law enforcement duties and frequently go unrecognized. The resolution is set to be considered on the floor of the House this week during National Police Week, which runs May 11–17.
