Shaheen Visits American Calan Inc. to Highlight Harms of Trump’s Sweeping Tariffs on Canada

(Northwood, NH) –Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) visited American Calan Inc. to discuss the harmful impact of President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada—New Hampshire’s largest trading partner. American Calan Inc. relies on specialty parts to build their equipment that are largely sourced from Canada and sells to customers across the Canadian border.You can view photos from the event here.
“Canada is New Hampshire’s largest trading partner and Granite Staters and Granite State businesses will be particularly impacted by the senseless tariffs President Trump has levied on our neighbors,”said Senator Shaheen.“During this visit I heard firsthand how these tariffs are already causing confusion and upending planning for small businesses like American Calan Inc. The President promised to lower costs for working Americans on everything from groceries to energy to housing and these tariffs will have the opposite effect.”
American Calan Inc. is based in Northwood, New Hampshire and manufactures specialty equipment for agricultural industry researchers conducting feed intake studies around the world.

The legislation is co-led by U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) and would keep costs down for imported goods by limiting the authority under theInternational Emergency Economic Powers Act(IEEPA)—which allows a President to immediately place unlimited tariffs after declaring a national emergency—while preserving IEEPA’s use for sanctions and other tools. Her effort to pass this bill by unanimous consentwas blockedby Senate Republicans.
The authorities granted to the President through the IEEPA represent the broadest and least certain of the possible paths an administration can take to impose sweeping tariffs. The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes on Imported Goods Act clarifies that the IEEPA may not be used to increase costs on American consumers and families by placing tariffs or tariff-rate quotas on imported goods. The legislation would preserve crucial national security tools granted to the President through the IEEPA authority to impose sanctions or to block all imports of goods that are dangerous to national security and would preserve the ability to push back on unfair trade practices of the People’s Republic of China.
