Delivering results for Ohio communities
Dear friends and neighbors, Safe infrastructure connects neighborhoods, jobs, and recreation to help Ohio’s economy and communities grow. I’ve listened to the needs of Ohio communities and responded by securing historic infrastructure investments for our state to boost the economy, improve efficiency, and keep Ohioans safe. Listening to Ohioans and delivering results that were decades in the making For more than 40 years, Ohioans have faced blocked roads, traffic congestion, and delays waiting for trains to cross at Fairfield’s Symmes Road and North Gilmore Road railroad intersection. Not only have they told me that it’s inconvenient for daily life, but the blockage prevents firefighters from efficient access to that service area and poses a risk for new drivers from the nearby high school. That’s why I secured funding for the Symmes Road Grade Separation project, which would eliminate two railroad crossings on Symmes Road and North Gilmore Road by creating an overpass. A rail corridor with nearly 50 trains per day runs through those crossings, and Symmes Road carries more than 12,000 vehicles daily. Separating road and rail traffic would keep people and products moving safely and efficiently. Hear directly from Ohioans about what this investment means for the community: “It was really great when Senator Husted was willing to hear out the problem and help us out by writing a letter and supporting us. So, we’re really thrilled that he was able to help us get this across the goal line, because it’s going to make a huge difference for our city, for our community,” said Gwen Brill, City of Fairfield. “If you talk about from when it first started 40 years ago to today, you know, we’re finally going to see that project get across the finish line,” said Scott Timmer, City Manager, City of Fairfield. “In the 70’s, we kind of discussed how the traffic was getting blocked and we’d do something about it, but nothing happened,” said Don Hassler, Board Chair, Butler County Transportation Improvement District. After working closely with Cincinnati leaders, 26 years later, we were able to secure a grant for the first time to begin the process of capping Fort Washington Way—which will help local businesses and the economy grow and thrive, all while keeping Ohioans’ safety at the forefront. I secured this funding from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program to construct an approximately 1.2-acre highway cap and public plaza over Fort Washington Way—delivering on a promise that was made a generation ago to this community. Hear directly from an Ohioan about what this investment means for the community: “[Senator Husted] was so interested in this project, he got it right away, because he gets economic development. He dug into this. He made phone calls, he got engaged with the administration, and really made sure that this project was front and center when it came time for BUILD grants to be awarded,” said Brendon Cull, President and CEO of the Cincinnati Regional Chamber.
