Congressman Shri Thanedar Introduces the Stop ICE Price Gouging Act
August 19, 2026 Congressman Shri Thanedar Introduces the Stop ICE Price Gouging Act Washington, D.C. — Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) introduced the Stop ICE Price Gouging Act and released the following statement: “Private detention companies should not be able to charge people in detention outrageous prices for basic necessities,” said Rep. Thanedar. “People should not have to pay unreasonable prices for everyday items like soap, toothpaste, or snacks. Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and with dignity.” Recent reports have found markups of 50% to 110% on basic items such as coffee, tampons, snacks, and batteries at detention facilities. While ICE detention standards require certain hygiene products to be provided at no cost, detainees are often given limited quantities that may not meet their needs. When detainees need to purchase additional items, they should not be subjected to excessive prices. The Stop ICE Price Gouging Act would: Cap the markup for essential items like soap, menstrual products, and toothpaste at 5%; Cap the markup for all other items at 35%; Prohibit additional fees, kickbacks, and revenue sharing arrangements. Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan's 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes.
