Rep. Torres Announces “Epstein Crime Victims Act”

Congressman Ritchie Torres has introduced legislation amid the 6th Anniversary of Jeffrey Epstein’s death.

The Epstein Crime Victims Act seeks to amend the Crime Victims’ Rights Act to ensure victims are notified of any non-prosecution agreements (NPAs) involving federal authorities, whether or not charges are filed, and gives victims the right to sue the government if this right is violated.

Prompted by the Epstein case, in which victims were kept in the dark about a secret plea deal, the legislation would close the loophole that allowed powerful predators to avoid accountability through backroom deals. The bill follows a 2021 ruling by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals that found the victims’ rights were violated in the original Epstein investigation.

The announcement comes the same weekend as the sixth anniversary of Epstein’s death in federal custody.
