Legislature Approves the Establishment of the Dementia Prevention
and Research Institute of Texas
Austin, TX – Today, Senator Joan Huffman, R-Houston, announced that Senate Bill 5 and Senate
Joint Resolution 3 received final legislative approval, which together create the Dementia Prevention
and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT). The establishment of DPRIT will position Texas as a
national leader in the fight against dementia, Alzheimer’s, and related disorders, accelerating
groundbreaking research and improving the lives of millions of Texans.
Senator Huffman, who authored the bills, issued the following statement:
“I am delighted to see Senate Bill 5 and Senate Joint Resolution 3 pass the Legislature and to see
Senate Bill 5 head to the Governor’s desk for signature. This is a major step forward for Texas, and
I am proud to champion this transformative initiative. By establishing the Dementia Prevention and
Research Institute of Texas, we are positioning our state to lead the charge against one of the most
devastating health challenges of our time. With $3 billion in funding over the next decade, we will
drive critical research, develop new strategies for prevention and treatment, and support our
healthcare community. Now, it’s up to voters to ensure this initiative moves forward.”
If approved by voters in November, DPRIT will receive $3 billion over the next decade to fund
cutting-edge research, expand Texas’ medical capabilities, and foster collaboration between
universities, medical institutions, and other partners. The initiative is also expected to create jobs,
drive medical breakthroughs, and deliver significant economic benefits to the state.
(Senator Joan Huffman represents District 17, which is comprised of Colorado, Jackson, Matagorda, and Wharton

Legislative Budget Board.)
