Senator Collins Attends Caribou Veterans of Foreign Wars Award Ceremony for Students and Educators

CARIBOU, ME –Today,U.S. Senator Susan Collins attended a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Award Ceremony hosted by the Caribou VFW Post 9389. Senator Collins helped present awards to students and educators, spoke at the event, and was herself presented with the National Job Corps Association Champion Award for her continued advocacy of the Job Corps program and work to prevent the closure of all Job Corps Centers and resume enrollment at Maine’s Loring and Penobscot Job Corps Centers last year.
“It was wonderful participating in today’s award ceremony at the Caribou VFW and shaking the hands of so many veterans, students and educators who are making a positive impact on their communities,”said Senator Collins.“I was also honored to receive the National Job Corps Association Champion Award. I’ve always been a strong supporter of Job Corps because I have seen firsthand the critical work they do to improve the lives of vulnerable young people in Maine and across the country. I was glad to protect Maine Job Corps last year from closures and fund this program as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. I’ll continue working to ensure the future is bright for Job Corps and the students it serves.”
Last year, Senator Collinsannouncedthat the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) reversed its decision to halt enrollment of new students at the Loring and Penobscot Job Corps Centers. This announcement came after Senator Collins repeatedly urged Labor Secretary Lori Chavez DeRemer to resume enrollment at Maine’s Job Corps Centers,citingexamples of success stories of Job Corps students like Adais Viruet-Torres, a graduate of Loring Job Corps Center and Husson University who overcame homelessness and now works as a nurse practitioner. Senator Collins, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee,secured$1.8 billion in funding for the national Job Corps program in the recently enacted funding bills.
