Rep. Sykes: President Trump Has Now Exceeded 60-Day Limit for Iran War Without Congressional Approval

May 01, 2026 Rep. Sykes: President Trump Has Now Exceeded 60-Day Limit for Iran War Without Congressional Approval WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Trump has now surpassed the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Act after initiating an unnecessary war with Iran without authorization from Congress. This raises urgent constitutional and accountability concerns. Legal experts and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pointed to the milestone as a key threshold requiring congressional action or an end to unauthorized military operations. U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) said Congress cannot allow any president to ignore the law and continue an open-ended war without the consent of the American people through their elected representatives. “The conflict has already resulted in the deaths of 14 American servicemembers, hundreds more injured, and there’s no clear exit strategy,” said Rep. Sykes. “Families back home are paying more every day. We can’t keep writing a blank check for this conflict while costs skyrocket and accountability disappears.” Rep. Sykes called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to immediately bring forward legislation implementing the War Powers Resolution, restore congressional oversight, and reaffirm that decisions of war and peace belong to the people’s representatives. Rep. Sykes will continue pushing for accountability, supporting servicemembers and their families, and ensuring Congress meets its constitutional responsibilities. Print Email Share Tweet
