Rep. Jimmy Gomez and 200+ House Democrats in File Amicus Brief Against Trump’s Unconstitutional Attack on Birthright Citizenship
WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and more than 200 House Democrats filed an amicus brief opposing Donald Trump’s unconstitutional executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship. The brief — filed in State of Washington, et al. v. Trump, et al. — defends the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of citizenship for anyone born on U.S. soil. “Ending birthright citizenship is unconstitutional and goes against what America stands for,” said Rep. Gomez . “I joined this amicus brief to stand up for the rule of law and defend the 14th Amendment. If you’re born in the U.S., you’re a citizen—period. Trump’s executive order is a blatant attempt to rewrite the Constitution, and the Court must reject it.” The filing was led by Litigation Task Force Co-Chairs Assistant Leader Joe Neguse and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, along with Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other key committee leaders. Leaders of the Congressional Tri-Caucus — Congressional Black Caucus Chair Yvette Clarke, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano Espaillat, and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Grace Meng — as well as Congressional Jewish Caucus Co-Chairs Jerry Nadler and Brad Schneider, also played a central role. The full amicus brief is available HERE . House Democrats add this to the growing list of court cases filed against the Trump Administration in which they have become involved, including successfully urging a federal judge to block efforts to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). ###
