Congressman Tim Moore Urges Navy to Name New Ship After the Battle of Kings Mountain
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) wrote a letter urging the U.S. Department of the Navy to name an upcoming ship the USS Kings Mountain , honoring the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina. Fought on October 7, 1780, the battle was a pivotal American victory during the Revolutionary War, with Thomas Jefferson describing it as the “turn of the tide of success” in the War of Independence.
“As our Nation marks its 250th birthday, that history deserves recognition in the naval fleet. The USS Kings Mountain is a natural fit for an amphibious assault ship or amphibious transport dock, consistent with the Navy's tradition of naming these platforms after significant military victories... The communities of Western North Carolina take great pride in this heritage,” Congressman Moore wrote in the letter.
