STATEMENT: Senator Blunt Rochester Statement on the Passing of Mike Purzycki - Lisa Blunt Rochester
Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), today issued the following statement on the passing of former Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of former mayor of Wilmington, Michael S. Purzycki. He was a dedicated public servant and a visionary leader, whose love for Wilmington was evident in everything he did. Mike shared a close friendship with my late father, former City Council President Theodore Blunt, and over the years, he became a dear friend to me as well. I had the honor of working with him on many issues, from the creation of the Hope Commission to addressing gun violence and economic development. “Mike’s greatest accomplishment was helping lead the transformation of Wilmington’s Riverfront. Through his tenacity, determination, brains, and charm, Mike turned what was once a neglected wasteland into a thriving hub of economic activity and community life. That transformation changed the trajectory of our city and created opportunity for generations of Delawareans. His legacy lies not only in bricks and mortar, but also in the spirit of service that inspired people like me. “My prayers are with his wife Bette, their children and grandchildren, and all those mourning this tremendous loss. He will surely be missed.”
