President Trump and Rep. Mast Honor Fallen Law Enforcement Officers in Oval Office

Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump and U.S. Congressman Brian Mast (FL-21) honored three fallen law enforcement officers and their families today in the Oval Office, presenting them with a first-of-its-kind Medal of Sacrifice. President Trump awarded the inaugural medals posthumously to three Palm Beach County deputies: Deputy Ralph “Butch” Waller, Deputy Ignacio “Dan” Diaz, and Deputy Luis Paez. “Every day, law enforcement officers and first responders risk their lives while protecting our communities,” said Rep. Brian Mast. “While we will never be able to truly thank the officers we have lost, this medal is a small way to express our eternal gratitude to those heroes and their loved ones. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.” During the Oval Office event, President Trump stated , “Today, we remember three remarkable heroes who will be the first ever recipients of this new medal. We will never forget their legacy and we will never forget the debt we owe to all these law enforcement heroes who gave their lives to keep us safe.” Earlier today, Rep. Mast introduced the Medal of Sacrifice Act, which authorizes the President to present an official medal to local, state, or federal law enforcement officers and first responders who are killed in the line of duty. The bill establishes a Commission of twelve law enforcement officers, appointed by the President, who are charged with determining eligibility for the medal, promoting its establishment, and determining procedures for award presentation. National symbols and heraldic elements will be featured on the medals, including the Great Seal of the United States, redesigned by Tiffany & Co. in 1885. “SACRIFICE” is inscribed, as well as three oak leaves, representing strength, resilience, and honoring the families of the fallen. The bill pays tribute to fallen law enforcement officers, first responders, and their families, reaffirming support for individuals who give their lives to uphold law and order.
