ICYMI: Boyle Announces Major Legislation to Lower Gas Prices

April 14, 2026 Press Release PHILADELPHIA, PA — Today, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) announced the Gas Price Relief Act during a press conference at a Philadelphia gas station. The legislation is designed to help lower gas prices, which continue to climb due to President Trump’s reckless war in Iran. “Six weeks ago, the average in the Philadelphia area for a gallon of gas was the same as it was nationally — under $3 a gallon,” said Congressman Boyle. “Then this president decided to launch an entirely unnecessary and reckless war in Iran. Now, as you can see behind me, the average for a gallon of gas in this area and nationally is far more than $4 a gallon.  We cannot wait for this war to end until we deliver relief to the American people. Let's do it now and pass my legislation.” Image The bill would suspend the 18.4-cent federal gas tax whenever the national average price of gas exceeds $4 per gallon, reducing or eliminating the tax depending on how high prices rise to provide immediate relief at the pump. To avoid a funding gap in the Highway Trust Fund, it would fully offset the lost revenue by redirecting roughly $30 billion in existing federal subsidies currently going to oil and gas companies into the fund. Gas prices are rising because of Donald Trump’s reckless war, driving up costs not just at the pump, but across the economy. Higher fuel prices are increasing the cost of commuting, shipping, groceries, and everyday essentials—placing additional strain on working families already facing an affordability crisis. According to recent inflation data, gas prices saw the largest monthly increase in six decades, underscoring the urgency of action. Boyle’s legislation is designed to deliver targeted, immediate relief while maintaining fiscal responsibility. The legislation reflects Boyle’s ongoing efforts to lower costs for working families and ensure that, when prices rise, relief is directed to consumers—not corporations benefiting from longstanding tax breaks. Boyle is the Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee and serves on the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over federal tax policy. ### Issues : Jobs and the Economy Local Issues
