Congresswoman Ross Statement on Need for Disaster Aid for Western NC

PressView on ross.house.gov

Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement: “The people of Western North Carolina are relying on the federal government for support on the long road to full recovery. President Trump saw their needs himself during his visit in January. “Governor Stein has been clear – our state requires $19 billion in federal assistance to support home reconstruction, road and bridge repairs, small business assistance, and more. While FEMA doesn’t face an immediate shortfall, it’s disappointing that government funding has passed the House with no consideration of resources to support our state’s long-term needs and there appears to be no plan to bring up a bill for this purpose anytime soon. “An extended delay in approving additional aid for Western North Carolina will likely have significant long-term consequences. That’s why it’s imperative that any appropriate legislative vehicle moving through Congress include the full $19 billion in disaster aid funding for our state. With so many competing priorities in Washington, we can’t afford to be cautious or complacent. “The President should immediately send a request to Congress to fully meet the needs identified by Governor Stein, and the House leadership should promptly attach this funding to any feasible legislation.”
