Sykes Stands Against Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes (OH-13) spoke out today after voting to direct the removal of U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities in Venezuela that have not been approved by Congress. “Today’s vote makes it clear what I have been saying all along. The president does not have the authority to send Americans into harm’s way. That power lies solely with Congress. Until the House takes decisive action against Venezuela, any strikes that are not authorized must stop immediately,” Rep. Sykes said. Since September, U.S. forces have carried out multiple strikes on vessels linked to Venezuela. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have raised concerns about the lack of a formal declaration of war or congressional authorization for these actions. Rep. Sykes emphasized that the War Powers Resolution requires U.S. forces to be withdrawn if Congress has not approved the operation.
