Congresswoman Biggs Introduces Hope Heals Act to Strengthen Mental Health Crisis Response

The legislation is initially cosponsored by Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02) and Congressman Paul Gosar (AZ-09). As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, Congresswoman Biggs has seen failures in the system up close. “Too many families, including right here in South Carolina, are hurting because someone they love could not get help in time,” said Congresswoman Biggs. “When someone reaches out in crisis, there should be someone on the other end who can help them quickly.” The Hope Heals Act directs federal agencies to improve how they share information and respond when someone shows signs of a mental health crisis or may be considering taking their own life. It calls on agencies to use tools that already exist, such as simple screening questions, to identify warning signs earlier. It also creates a clear process to make sure people who reach out for help are connected to care quickly. This is a practical fix that uses existing resources to help people when it matters most.
