Budzinski and End Citizens United President Discuss Anti-Corruption Reforms

CHAMPAIGN, IL – Today, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) and Tiffany Muller, President of End Citizens United, sat down at the Illini Union for a conversation on anti-corruption legislation and the influence of money in politics. A recording of the event can be found HERE.

The conversation was moderated by University of Illinois professor Brian Gaines and centered around different legislative mechanisms to combat dark money in politics, ban stock trading by members of Congress, strengthen Supreme Court ethics and transparency, and advance broader anti-corruption measures.

“Today’s conversation was incredibly important. Since the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision sixteen years ago, money has flooded our politics at the expense of our democracy. Elected leaders must be accountable to the people they serve – not corporate interests and wealthy donors – which is why overturning Citizens United is a pillar of my anti-corruption agenda,” said Budzinski. “I’m grateful to President Muller for her leadership on this issue and her willingness to sit down for a thoughtful, productive discussion on how we can put power back where it belongs: with the people.”

“At a time when corruption is being normalized at the highest levels of government, Representative Budzinski is showing tremendous leadership by refusing to accept the status quo,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “She understands that corruption in Washington hurts working families by drowning out their voices and driving up costs. She’s meeting this moment by fighting to restore integrity, accountability, and transparency to our government so that decisions are guided by public interest, not special interests. End Citizens United is proud to stand with Representative Budzinski as she advances this fight.”

Earlier today, Budzinski unveiled her Anti-Corruption Agenda, which highlights a selection of forward-thinking bills introduced by her colleagues in Washington that she is proud to support.
