Senator Gallego Met with Trade Official and Local Candidates, Visited Canada’s National War Memorial OTTAWA — Today, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) traveled to Ottawa, Canada on an official congressional trip to strengthen trade relations in the midst of the Trump Administration’s continued actions to escalate a trade war with Canada. During his trip, Senator Gallego held a press conference with Canadian media. Senator Gallego hosts a press conference with Canadian media He made the below statements to the press: On Hegseth posting photo mocking Canadian Youth Cadet program : “Number one, it’s really deeply disrespectful to the men and women of Canada that have died fighting with us, whether you know we go back to World War I and all the way to the Afghanistan War. It’s deteriorating to future work together. Right now, Canada is on the front lines. You have Canadian men and women in Latvia right now, potentially putting themselves as a tripwire in case of Russian aggression…. And what you’re seeing is a reflection of these sycophants that are just trying to make this president happy, not understanding that they’re potentially putting our security in danger…. But there was nothing that was to be gained from that [Hegseth’s tweet]. How did this help the discourse between us and Canada? How did it actually help repair our relationship with our Canadian partners, which are right now in the Pentagon still to this day, and are helping us man NORAD and all these other areas? I think it’s adolescent, and it doesn’t help any country, but certainly doesn’t help the United States in terms of its security.” On what Democrats should do with Trump’s reckless tariffs on Canada once they regain power: I think the anybody who is running for president should be very clear. It should be the goal of a Democratic president to remove these tariffs, 100% If it’s within your power and within your political power, do it…. Tariff policy is not a replacement for industrial policy, and I think the President just doesn’t understand that, and we all suffer for it. On Trump renaming Lake Ontario: “Even the MAGA world is not rallying around Lake America. They understand that this is dumb. They may still be Trump supporters, but this is not a thing for them.” Read more: The Canadian Press: Arizona senator says Trump tariffs ‘just dumb’ CBC News: Hegseth’s comments on Canadian military ‘stupid,’ says U.S. Democratic senator National Post: U.S. Senator says Democrats will have a tough time curtailing Trump’s tariff policy iPolitics: U.S. Senator says returning to CUSMA negotiation best path to repair fractured trade relationship Senator Gallego also met with Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade Yasir Naqvi to discuss the importance of the bilateral economic relationship the U.S. and Canada shares.
