Natural Gas Customers Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander (NH-02) sent a letter demanding detailed information from Liberty Utilities on its refusal to serve natural gas customers in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. The decision has caused unacceptable delays and dramatic cost increases for new homes in an area already hit hard by the housing crisis. Liberty Utilities, a regulated utility company which provides natural gas service in New Hampshire, has confirmed that it will not connect new natural gas customers , and may reject requests to reconnect from existing customers in as many as a half dozen towns in New Hampshire, including Franklin, Canterbury, and Northfield. Goodlander, who previously took on corporate monopolies in the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice, sounded the alarm last month about the startling affordability impacts of Liberty’s sudden decision. “Tens of thousands of hardworking Granite Staters and New Hampshire small businesses rely on Liberty Utilities to fulfill its obligation to provide safe, adequate, and affordable natural gas service,” said Congresswoman Goodlander. “ So why on earth is this foreign-owned, for-profit monopoly suddenly jacking up costs for New Hampshire by denying gas services to our cities, towns, families, businesses, and developers? Businesses, concerned citizens, and local leaders deserve to get answers and solutions from Liberty — I won’t quit until we get both.” You can read the full letter HERE . The letter follows a meeting Goodlander convened earlier this year in Franklin, featuring local officials, residents, planners, developers, consumer advocates, clean energy stakeholders, and a representative from Liberty. Liberty’s representative committed to providing answers and transparency regarding the company’s refusal to connect new customers. Goodlander has worked to reign in soaring profits from investor-owned utility companies and to lower costs for Granite Staters, as runaway utility profits drive utility bills higher and higher. She helped introduce the Lowering Utility Bills Act , which reins in the runaway profits of for-profit utilities, which are raising utility prices across the country by demanding exorbitant profits and forcing consumers to pay for outrageous expenses like private jet rides, lobbying, and contributions to politicians. She also pressed the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission , urging the Commission to reject a 43.4% rate hike requested by Eversource as part of the monopoly utility’s most recent rate case. ### OFFICE LOCATIONS CONCORD DISTRICT OFFICE 18 North Main Street 4th Floor Concord, NH 03301 Phone: (603) 226-1002 Get Directions NASHUA DISTRICT OFFICE 184 Main Street Suite 222 Nashua, NH 03060 Phone: (603) 226-1002 To schedule an appointment, click here.
