Rep. Cammack Responds to Shooting at Washington Hilton During White House Correspondents' Dinner
April 26, 2026 Press Release Congresswoman thanks law enforcement and Secret Service after President Trump, First Lady, and dinner attendees are evacuated safely WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tonight, Congresswoman Kat Cammack (R-FL-03) responded to reports of gunfire at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Dinner. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, members of the Cabinet, and dinner attendees were evacuated safely, and one individual is reported in custody. The Washington Hilton is the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan was shot in an attempted assassination in March 1981. Cammack thanked law enforcement and Secret Service personnel who responded tonight, and said the Congresswoman's office is monitoring the situation as facts develop. While we don't yet know all the facts, I am incredibly grateful that President Trump, the First Lady, members of the Cabinet, and every attendee are safe tonight. Political violence has no place in this country. The President of the United States continues to face threats to his life, and that is unacceptable in America. It is not lost on anyone that this is the same hotel where President Reagan was shot in 1981. Enough is enough. I'm thankful for the law enforcement officers and Secret Service agents whose bravery and vigilance protected the President and everyone in that room tonight. My family and I are praying for the swift and full recovery of the Secret Service agent who was shot in the line of duty. I look forward to learning more about the individual now in custody as they are brought to full justice for this horrendous act." said Cammack.
