Neal, Larson Call on Congress to Act After Whistleblower Report of ‘DOGE’ Mishandling of Americans’ Private Social Security Data

East Hartford, CT – Today, House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (MA-01) and Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member John B. Larson (CT-01) called on Congress to act after the New York Times published a whistleblower report that ‘DOGE’ “uploaded a database with the personal information of hundreds of millions of Americans to a vulnerable cloud server.” “As President Trump continues his march toward authoritarianism, every American should be concerned with the protection and use of their private data housed throughout the federal government,” said Larson and Neal. “Today’s credible whistleblower claims show our worst fears have come true: the Trump Administration is carelessly and dangerously mishandling the people’s most private information. “We’ve been warning of this danger for months and commend Charles Borges for doing the right thing by courageously stepping forward to blow the whistle on this reckless and potentially illegal behavior,” they continued. “When we return to Washington next week, Chairman Smith must bring the same fervor to this investigation as he did to the whistleblowers that came forward last Congress. With the personal data of over 300 million Americans at stake, anything less is a gross dereliction of duty.” Ranking Members Larson and Neal introduced the Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act to block political appointees, like Elon Musk and his ‘DOGE,’ from accessing sensitive data systems at the Social Security Administration. It would also establish privacy requirements in law for beneficiary data and strengthen oversight and civil penalties for any privacy and disclosure violations of Social Security beneficiaries’ personal information. ###
