Horsford and Clyburn Convene Nevada Leaders on the Future of Voting Rights, Representation, and Political Power
June 17, 2026 Press Release NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV – Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04) hosted civil rights leader and trailblazer Congressman Jim Clyburn (SC-06) throughout the Las Vegas Valley for a series of events centered on expanding Black political, economic, and civic power amid ongoing attacks on voting rights, representation, and community institutions. Congressman Horsford and Congressman Clyburn met with Black elected officials from across Nevada, sat down with faith and civil rights leaders, heard directly from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) students, alumni, and parents, and toured the Las Vegas Culinary Academy. A clear throughline emerged across every conversation: representation is not the finish line, it creates responsibility. Families are worried, and communities are watching for signs that institutions still work for them. HBCU alumni and parents underscored that they are seeing representation diminished and Black voices sidelined, with fear filling that void. Students made clear that the assault on Black institutions is an assault on the pipeline that produces Black leadership, and that this fight extends far beyond any one campus or any one district. "Congressman Clyburn has spent decades showing this country what principled leadership looks like. His generation fought to open doors that many believed would never open.” Rep. Horsford explained. “Now we have a responsibility to ensure those doors remain open and that every American has an equal opportunity to participate in our democracy. Across every conversation had this week, I heard a clear message: people want leaders who will protect their right to vote, ensure fair representation, and create pathways to opportunity for future generations. The challenges facing Black communities today may look different than they did decades ago, but the stakes are no less significant. That is why we must not only continue fighting to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act but also strengthen the protections that help ensure every voice can be heard. The very future of our democracy depends on it." “It was a real pleasure to join Congressman Steve Horsford in meetings with many of his constituents of Nevada’s 4th Congressional District. We met with affordable housing advocates, voting and civil rights activists, community organizers and faith leaders. We heard directly about the issues that matter most to individuals and families in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada," said Congressman James E. Clyburn. “These conversations were intense and enlightening. The current lack of accessibility, affordability and accountability in America require us to take stock of our national priorities and develop informed approaches to the challenges that lie ahead. I look forward to working with Congressman Horsford and my other colleagues to find real solutions to the problems of everyday Americans.” The Congressmen's visit included the following events: Civil Rights & Faith Leader Discussion Tour of Culinary Training Academy Las Vegas Roundtable HBCU Student & Alumni Black Elected Officials Discussion ### Issues : Economy Public Safety
