Congressman Patronis Fights to Defend the Second Amendment

August 12, 2026 Press Release WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, Congressman Jimmy Patronis (R-FL) joined nearly 50 of his Republican colleagues in Congress in signing a bicameral letter led by Congressman Andrew Clyde and Senator Steve Daines urging Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to defend a landmark victory for the Second Amendment. The lawmakers are calling on the Department of Justice to stand with the Constitution and not appeal a major Second Amendment victory. On August 5, a federal court in Texas ruled that the federal government can no longer require registration of suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and certain other firearms after Congress eliminated the related National Firearms Act taxes. The lawmakers are urging the DOJ to let the ruling stand nationwide, end unnecessary federal red tape, and protect the constitutional rights of gun owners. “Law-abiding Americans shouldn’t have to beg the federal government for permission to exercise a constitutional right,” said Congressman Patronis. “This is consistent with everything I’ve fought for in Congress, from national reciprocity for concealed carry to repealing the Hughes Amendment. The Second Amendment ‘shall not be infringed,’ and I’ll continue fighting every day to stop Washington from putting unnecessary restrictions on our rights. The DOJ should respect the Constitution and let this historic ruling stand.” Congressman Patronis remains committed to fighting federal overreach and to ensuring the constitutional rights of Americans are protected.
